Uncontrolled Spread: Why COVID – 19 Crushed Us And How We Can Defeat The Next Pandemic
Scott Gottlieb, MD
I was not sure whether it was “too soon” to read Uncontrolled Spread: Why COVID – 19 Crushed Us And How We Can Defeat The Next Pandemic by Scott Gottlieb, MD, but I was anxious to cut through a lot of the noise and try to understand where we could have done better as a nation at managing through the pandemic. Gottlieb is the former FDA Commissioner and sits on the Board of Pfizer.
Gottlieb shares his frank assessment of where he thinks the current and prior administrations and the lifelong bureaucrats managed adequately and not so well. He doesn’t mince words – especially when it comes to the CDC and the lack of preparedness. Gottlieb also provides his views on what we should be doing differently to be prepared for another pandemic and he worries that the next one could be the result of terrorism.
Gottlieb is one voice among many and some of his comments are self-serving, but overall, he seems to have gotten the timing, the challenges and the missed opportunities right. There are some lessons he shares that we would do well to listen to – for consideration. Anyone interested in learning more about the pandemic would benefit from reading this book, but I would also encourage the reader to not stop here and to seek out other voices as well.
