Breathing Room

If you are visiting friends and family during a day trip, let them know ahead of time that you will only be spending X number of hours with them, then stick to that timeline.

If your family will be overnight guests, set a specific bedtime for the kids and even for the adults in your family. This provides an opportunity for some quiet time. Make sure the younger ones get naps and consider a family nap too

Allow your child to bring something special with them that only they can use. For a child it may be a favorite toy or an electronic game. Let the child know that she can only use the toy during quiet time in the privacy of her room or after a nap. Favorite toys and games help keep kids settled.  Bring a book or other quiet activity for yourself as well. Remember, you don’t have to be “on” all the time. A little time to recharge your batteries will help you be a better guest.
